Commissioners advance 2025 road list; sheriff recommends 40 mph on Sutherland Road after traffic study

Commissioners at the Jan. 6 work session reviewed the county’s 2025 road list and voted to forward the list for the regular session; they also heard a traffic study on Sutherland Road and advanced a proposed speed limit change to the regular session.
County road supervisor Hodges delivered the 2025 road list to commissioners; members said the list had been provided ahead of the meeting and asked no substantive questions. Commissioners voted to move the road list item forward.
Sheriff Eaves presented the results of a seven‑day traffic study on Sutherland Road, focused primarily on the 800 block. He said the study recorded 2,732 vehicles during the sample period and reported average speeds of 33 mph in one direction and 37 mph in the other; the 85th percentile speeds were 37 mph and 41 mph, respectively. Eaves also reviewed crash history from January 2019 through December 2024 and said there were 40 crashes, including five that resulted in head injuries and 14 deer strikes.
Given the 85th percentile results and crash context, Eaves recommended setting the posted speed at 40 mph rather than reducing it to 35 mph, saying a 35 mph limit would be “too low” for the measured traffic and could be unreasonable for drivers. Commissioner Williams moved to advance the speed‑limit recommendation to the board’s regular session for action; Commissioner Buckner seconded the motion and it passed by voice vote.
Both the 2025 road list and the Sutherland Road speed‑limit recommendation will be considered at the upcoming regular meeting.
