Planning commission votes to recommend restructuring to six members and asks county commissioners to fill vacancy

Under the proposal, each commissioner would have an appointing authority (five district appointees and the Board chair’s appointee) and the commission would elect its chair — with the chair not voting except to break a tie (mirroring the county commission’s practice as described in the meeting).
Commissioners asked staff to forward the recommendation and to place the item on the Board of Commissioners agenda for the county’s last meeting of the month. One motion included language that the Board of Commissioners appoint someone to fill the seat vacated by the member identified as Stephanie Hart if the bylaws are amended; commissioners emphasized that no sitting member would be removed before the end of the current appointed term.
Speakers argued the change would ease recruitment by reducing the total number of volunteer seats and would also provide clarity to the public by aligning the planning body’s size with the Board of Commissioners. Other commissioners cautioned that appointment choices remain political and that reducing seats will not guarantee a more diverse or different composition.
The commission recorded a motion and a second and then voted to send the recommendation and the accompanying language about the appointment to the Board of Commissioners. Staff was asked to ensure the recommendation appears on the Board of Commissioners agenda for the last meeting of the month.
