Braintree schedules January community presentations and Feb. 10 committee briefing on AppGeo elementary-school study

Braintree School Committee members were given a detailed timeline Monday for an AppGeo study of elementary-school configuration and redistricting. The consultant will present building-condition data and multiple scenarios to the community in two presentations — an in-person session Jan. 21 at East Middle School and a virtual session Jan. 22 — and is expected to deliver formal recommendations to the school committee by Feb. 10.
Why it matters: the study could lead to school boundary changes or consolidation decisions that affect students, families and property owners. Committee members emphasized the need for transparency, address-level impact information and broad outreach beyond ParentSquare to reach non-parent stakeholders.
District administrators said AppGeo began data-gathering in October, has run working- and advisory-group meetings, and will use community feedback from the Jan. 21–22 presentations to refine scenarios. The presentations will be recorded and posted; administrators plan a public comment/feedback form (QR code) and a published FAQ that will include responses to community questions. Following AppGeo’s submission of recommendations, the school committee will schedule a public hearing where residents may testify before the committee considers any vote. Committee members discussed providing interactive tools that allow residents to enter an address and see impacts for narrowed scenarios once the committee receives AppGeo’s recommendations.
Committee members also debated how much preliminary material AppGeo should publish. Administrators said the Jan. presentations will show multiple conceptual scenarios but cautioned against publishing too many speculative options that may never reach the committee’s consideration; several members urged maximum transparency and said the public should be able to review the scenarios and the consultant’s rationale. The district committed to broad outreach — posting on the town website, issuing ParentSquare messages and working with town hall — and to publishing presentation materials and recordings after the forums.
