District director proposes tuckpointing and window replacement at Bryant Elementary to avoid higher future costs

David C., director of business services for Superior School District, told the board the district needs a tuckpointing project at Bryant Elementary and that contractors recommended replacing the building’s 30-year-old windows while masonry work is underway.

David said combining window replacement with tuckpointing would likely add about $200,000 to the tuckpointing estimate but that doing both now could save the district money later because the masonry work requires removing siding in places where the windows sit. “If we don't do the windows at the same time, we’re going to tear some of that down to put in windows,” David said.

Board members discussed prioritization across buildings. David said one estimate called for tuckpointing costs in the $600,000 range at 4 Corners — a figure he attributed to deferred maintenance dating from the mid-1990s — and emphasized that the district’s long-range facility plan identifies and ranks critical work districtwide. He and other trustees noted roofing, deferred maintenance and aging systems across multiple schools, and said capital funding or a capital referendum would be required for major roof replacements.

Operations staff will finalize engineer estimates and prepare the project for bidding. David said the district will stagger projects because many summer contractors are needed for work that must be completed during July and August; he asked staff to provide the board an updated long-range facility list with priorities and cost estimates at a future meeting.

No formal action was taken on Bryant’s project at this meeting; the update was informational and intended to inform future budget and capital planning decisions.
