Mayor Stimpson and councilors listed shelter partners and said Wave transit will waive fixed-route fares so people can reach shelters during a multi‑day cold snap.
Mayor Stimpson used his remarks at the Mobile City Council meeting on Jan. 7 to announce emergency shelter coordination and transportation support during a period of unusually cold weather.
The mayor thanked the Waterfront Rescue Mission and other partners for operating shelters and said anyone who needs shelter during the cold spell can call 251-433-1847; he also recited a second phone number that was not clear on the public record. He named participating shelters as Waterfront Rescue Mission, Central Presbyterian Church, McKinney Place, Salvation Army, Ryan’s Refuge and the Theater Church of God.
“Special thank you goes out to the Waterfront Rescue Mission who’s helping coordinate the shelters for those who need it during these frigid times,” the mayor said. He added that Wave transit will waive fares on fixed routes for riders who need transportation to shelter locations.
The mayor also encouraged residents to attend a free financial boot camp organized by the Office of Supplier Diversity and Community Affairs on Jan. 11 at the Tomnville (Tomoville) library; the program will cover credit building, tax preparation and home‑buying information and is offered with local partners including Bancroft in Alabama and the Mobile Public Library.
Separately, the mayor recognized the Alabama School of Math and Science for recent national rankings.
The shelter announcement provides immediate options for people seeking refuge from the cold; city staff and partner agencies will handle referrals and shelter placement.
