VDOT reports bridge, pipe and paving work scheduled across Franklin County
Summary
VDOT told the Board that several bridge and pipe replacement projects are complete or nearing construction on county routes, with scheduled closures for pipe replacement near Chestnut Hill bridge and awarded bridge projects on US 220 to proceed next year.
A Virginia Department of Transportation representative updated the Franklin County Board on ongoing and planned road and bridge projects.
Brian Cassell with VDOT reported completion of the Route 641 Callaway Road bridge and a pipe replacement on Route 657 (Red Valley Road), and indicated multiple US 220 bridge projects have been awarded and will be constructed over time. He said a pipe replacement on Route 705 Chestnut Hill will require an extended closure; the bridge is currently posted such that a school bus cannot safely cross the structure. VDOT plans to advertise the replacement this month and hopes construction will begin next spring or summer; in advance of the long bridge closure, crews will replace a failing pipe beginning tentatively Jan. 27, 2025, with work scheduled to reopen the road by March 14, 2025, if rock is not encountered.
Cassell said a connector road at Summit View Business Park is nearing completion and that traffic engineers are reviewing a request to adjust a 40‑mph limit along a stretch of Route 40. He told the board that several bridge projects on US 220 were awarded and will proceed in phases, and that for one ongoing culvert/pipe project crews expect to finish the headwalls and final cleanup within days.
Supervisors asked about potholes at Brick Church Road and a washed‑out culvert at Scruggs and Route 122; Cassell said contractors were addressing potholes and that the Scruggs location requires relocating a traffic box and paving to the signal base to create additional hard surface. He estimated the Scruggs work would happen next year after planning and utility coordination.
Cassell closed by wishing the board a happy holiday season and asked to be contacted with further questions.
