Board narrows candidate process for upcoming vacancy; six finalists to be invited to speak

The Cabarrus County Board of Education narrowed its selection process for an open board seat during the Jan. 16 work session and closed nominations after the board agreed on finalists who will present at next week’s meeting.

Board leadership said eight people submitted resumes and cover letters for the vacancy; two applicants—Brian Floyd and Cindy Furtenbaugh—asked to withdraw, leaving six candidates. Board members nominated individual finalists by name and then closed nominations. The chair set a process in which finalists will have three minutes to speak at the next meeting and the public may provide comment before the board votes to fill the vacancy.

Board members said they were looking for candidates who bring community perspective, student focus and governance preparation. In nominating candidates, board members referenced community ties, service and relevant experience. One member highlighted a nominee’s participation in a nonpartisan leadership program as evidence of preparation for the governing role; another emphasized character and prior district administrative experience.

Process and timing: The board closed nominations and will notify the finalists. The finalists named during the meeting included Michelle Williams, Robert Kirk, Shannon Payne Lancaster and others; the chair said official notices would be sent to the finalists and that the board expects to hear three-minute presentations and public comment at next week’s meeting before voting.

Ending: The board closed nominations by voice vote and scheduled the finalist presentations for the next business meeting so members can make a final appointment.
