The Marshall Public School District board approved budget parameters for fiscal 2025–26 after staff described key factors shaping next year’s forecasting, including the district’s audited general fund balance and forthcoming teacher negotiations.
An unnamed district administrator told the board that the district’s audited general fund balance "came in at about 21%" and noted the district’s minimum goal for that percentage is 8 percent, adding, "I would say we don't want to go under 15." The administrator said personnel costs and upcoming negotiations with the Marshall Education Association (the district's teachers' bargaining group) are likely to be significant drivers of next year’s budget.
The board discussed special education funding uncertainty and noted health insurance is included in personnel fringe calculations. Board members directed staff to use the approved parameters as a framework for continued work with the finance committee and the administration, with further decisions to return to the full board later in the budget process.
The motion to approve the budget parameters was moved and seconded and recorded as approved during the meeting.
