In 36th District Court the people and defense counsel set a preliminary-exam date for Ahmad Jada (case no. 246-1142) and clarified discovery and bond-monitoring conditions related to a companion case.
The court: what was decided and why it matters. The prosecutor listed multiple counts against Ahmad Jada, including second-degree murder and related operating-while-intoxicated counts; defense counsel confirmed receipt of discovery and requested an exam date. Both sides agreed to a preliminary exam the week of Jan. 23, and the court scheduled the exam for Jan. 23 at 10:45 a.m. to accommodate competing calendar commitments.
At the hearing, prosecutor Brian J. Grego (P-74568) appeared for the people and Hannah Barron appeared for the defendant. The court read the charges on the record: “Count 1, homicide, murder, 2nd degree; Count 2, operating while intoxicated causing death; Count 3, reckless driving causing death,” and additional counts that the prosecution listed. Barron told the court she had received discovery and requested a preliminary-exam date the week of Jan. 20 or later; Grego raised no objection and asked for a late-morning slot because of another hearing. The court set the exam for Jan. 23 at 10:45 a.m.
Defense counsel raised and the parties discussed bond-monitoring conditions. Barron said the defense had been informed the defendant was released on a GPS tether; the prosecutor clarified that his office’s record showed Jada on an "alcohol tether" (a breathalyzer condition) in a separate case and on a GPS tether in this case; the defense and prosecutor agreed to clear any discrepancy with the tether-monitoring vendor before the next hearing. The prosecutor asked that existing alcohol-monitoring conditions tied to the companion case remain in place; Barron said that device relates to the other matter and that they would address it with the circuit court judge if needed.
No contested evidentiary motions were resolved at the hearing. The court recorded that discovery had been provided and that counsel for the defense had the materials. The parties confirmed the scheduled preliminary-exam date and the time; the judge recorded the scheduling on the docket and the matter will proceed on Jan. 23 at 10:45 a.m. in person at 36th District Court.
The transcript shows the prosecution and defense cooperated on scheduling and on clarifying monitoring conditions, and the court directed the parties to work with tether-monitoring agents to reconcile any administrative confusion about GPS versus alcohol-monitoring devices before the next appearance.
No plea or substantive rulings on charges occurred at the scheduling hearing; the matter remains set for a preliminary examination.
