Residents press council on road repairs and development impacts; officials point to project pages and hearings

Several residents used the Jan. 6 public-comment period to press Dorchester County Council on roads and large-scale development.

Tommy Fagan of Summerville urged the council to repair the county’s worst roads first instead of building new projects that benefit some commuters. "Common sense seems to say fix what's broke the worst first," he said, naming Delmar Highway, Dorchester Road, Highway 78 and the Orangeburg loop.

Suzanne Chastain of Somerville raised concerns about a planned widening of Miles Jamieson Road and related work near Stallsville Loop, saying survey flags and condemnation notices had appeared near homes. She asked how water use and wastewater from large developments would be handled and whether reclaimed heat or water reuse had been considered.

A council member responded that details and maps for Stallsville Loop and other projects are available at DorchesterTransportation.com, that the Stallsville Loop roundabout concept is still under engineering review and public hearings are required before any condemnation or construction. The council member also said the Clayfield Trail section mentioned by speakers is a developer-constructed road (Lennar).

Both speakers asked the council to prioritize existing infrastructure and provide clearer public information; staff and council directed residents to the county’s transportation website for project timelines and drawings.
