La Porte Park Board wins national award, plans pickleball master plan and installs poem QR codes

The La Porte Park Board, reported to the Common Council on Jan. 6, said Kestling Park won a National Softball Association award for its 2024 NSL tournament support and approved multiple operational changes and projects, including a pickleball master plan.
Councilwoman Ficus, summarizing the board's Dec. 18 meeting, said the Barbara Freedman Poet Laureate Project will place accessible QR codes on existing park benches. Scanning a code will give users a choice of audio or written poems via an app and website that will include a location map, partner and donor lists, and information about La Porte County and Project Poets.
The Park Board approved changes to field usage fees (the first increase since 2020) and amended rates for Stone Lake kayak storage lockers to $350 per year with no yearly commitment or $75 per month; lockers not leased in May would drop to $50 per month. The board renewed Kyle Kashmer's Beachwood Pro contract for another year.
The Park Board authorized the park department to issue a request for proposals for a consultant to develop a pickleball master plan; the Park Foundation will fund the cost of the master plan. Ficus told the council the board currently has four dedicated pickleball courts and the sport is growing locally.
The Park Board also noted its next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 15 at 4 p.m. at the park office.
No public objections or council amendments were recorded during the common council meeting when the parks report was delivered.
