Maple Heights Board elects officers, names designees and moves into executive session

The Maple Heights City Board of Education on Jan. 6, 2025, elected board officers for the year and completed several routine appointments before moving into executive session.

Board member nominations opened for president; a nomination of "Mister Blackwell" was closed and the board approved his election by roll-call vote. The board likewise opened nominations for vice president and approved Sabrina Shepherd in a roll-call vote that recorded two abstentions during that ballot.

The board administered the oath of office to the newly elected officers on the meeting floor. The board next appointed the treasurer as the district’s public records training board designee for 2025, referencing Ohio statutory authority cited in the record (ORC 149.43 and 109.43). The board also appointed Sonya Williams, administrative assistant to the treasurer, as the compliance officer for board policy DJH (credit cards).

The president named delegates for the OSBA capital conference and the board approved those nominations by motion and roll call. The board then reviewed and assigned members to standing committees—board development, facilities, family and community engagement, records retention and policy, student achievement, and wellness, safety and student support—assignments that were finalized in the meeting record.

Finally, the board voted to move into executive session with the stated purpose of considering appointment, employment, dismissal, promotion or compensation of an employee; the motion passed by roll call and the board entered executive session at 6:29 p.m. The meeting record shows no action taken during the executive session and the motion noted explicitly that no action would be taken in that closed session.
