County staff flag mine expansion filings; zoning hearing set after map discrepancies

LaSalle County staff told the Land Use and TIF Committee on Jan. 6 that the county had received Clean Air Act and EPA notifications tied to mine expansion plans and that a zoning hearing about a proposed expansion was scheduled for next week.
Staff identified the site as the same mine but said the submittal included two different maps: one described a proposed increase of seven acres and another described 14 acres, while both pointed to the same parcel. “I would have them, maybe if you could question them a little bit about that,” the staff member said, adding they would follow up after the meeting.
Committee members asked whether a house located within the proposed expansion area had been discussed previously; staff said the clerk’s office received a submission that identified an expansion into an area not previously permitted and that the zoning hearing next week would address the proposal. The committee did not take a formal vote on the mine expansion at the Jan. 6 meeting.
The committee also noted two air-quality notifications: one emission source outside the county in Sandwich, and one within the county in Troy Grove (labeled Grove Station number 50). Staff said they were not aware of changes since the site’s last renewal that would warrant concern.
