Planning Commission to host public meeting on draft hazard mitigation plan in January

Medical Lake planning staff told the Planning Commission on Dec. 19 that the commission will hold a public meeting in January to review a draft hazard mitigation plan and gather public input.
Staff said the draft plan is about 200 pages and will be provided to commissioners in advance. Consultant Shaileta is scheduled to attend the January meeting and present an overview of the draft plan, how it was developed, and the stakeholder input already incorporated. Staff emphasized the January session is a public meeting for input, not a public hearing tied to an immediate decision; the commission will be asked later to make a recommendation to the city council as part of the city’s comprehensive planning work.
Commissioners asked about the procedural difference between a public meeting and a public hearing. Staff explained that a public hearing requires more formal advertisement (for example, newspaper notice published at least two weeks in advance) and triggers hearing rules because a decision may follow; a public meeting is advertised on the regular agenda and is intended to solicit comments without an immediate decision.
Staff said the draft will be posted for public review and that the consultant will give an overview at the January meeting so citizens can provide input before the commission forwards a recommendation to council at a later meeting.
