Kewaunee County Finance Committee members heard that sales-tax collections have leveled and that a planned wraparound house project is on hold pending funding and a review of a new law.
During the meeting, Paul, a county finance staff member, said the most recent sales-tax remittance — the December payment for November activity — was $132,047. "Year to date, 1,000,434 and change, and we're about 26,000 behind where we were last year," Paul said, adding that two months remain in the county's reporting year.
The report matters because sales-tax receipts fund general services and because the county must close its books for the year. "We got two months to go," Paul told the committee, noting that while collections are still ahead of budget the year-over-year growth has flattened.
Committee members also reviewed benefits and payroll reporting. Paul told the committee the medical and dental claims reports he received were about two months behind due to slower reporting from Sentiva; October data were included but November had not arrived. On overtime, Paul said the payroll run processed on Jan. 3 covers pay earned in December and that the county will record a journal entry to attribute those checks to December expenses because the payroll system posts only by check date.
Discussion also touched on a county-supported wraparound house project. The Committee chair said the project is "on hold right now until we figure out what this new law, how it's gonna affect what the county has." The chair said the county would need to invest more money than currently budgeted to continue, and that feasibility is under review.
The committee set its next regular meeting for Feb. 7 at 8:00 a.m.
No formal action was taken on the wraparound house during the meeting; it was discussed in general updates and committee member questions.
