Mountlake Terrace city staff announced that the Smith family, who organized Tour de Terrace for roughly 30 years, is retiring from running the annual event. City Manager Jeff told the council the event was run by the Smith family and not the city, and staff will evaluate options and return to council with proposals for continuing or replacing the event.
"The Smith family… is retiring from doing that event," the city manager said, and the city will assess alternatives and report back. Council members and other speakers responded with appreciation and memories: multiple councilors recounted personal and family experiences with the parade and festival, and urged the community to consider stepping up to keep a similar event alive.
In the same report, staff said the Jan. 16 City Council meeting will be canceled because a quorum of councilors will attend the South County Cities dinner on that date. "Because a quorum will be at that meeting, City Council meeting for January 16th will be cancelled," the city manager said; staff will reschedule agenda items as needed.
Councilors described Tour de Terrace as a longtime community tradition involving volunteers, vendors and large infrastructure. Several members emphasized the event's complexity—chairs, tents, semi‑trailers and licensed drivers—and thanked the Smith family for decades of volunteer effort. Council Member Woodard and others urged community members to organize if they want the festival to continue, noting that multiple people and organizations historically contributed to the event's success.
There was no formal council action on the Tour de Terrace item; staff said they will return with options for council consideration and noted contracts and timing (summer contracts) mean a decision will need timely planning if the city or community groups pursue a replacement.
Actions noted during the manager's report: City Manager announced cancellation of the Jan. 16 council meeting due to quorum at the South County Cities dinner; no formal vote recorded.
