Jackson County supervisors elect Don Schmeicher chair, approve routine administrative items

Don Schmeicher was elected chair of the Jackson County Board of Supervisors on Thursday during the board’s first meeting of 2025, replacing the outgoing chair, who thanked the board for support during his term.
The supervisors also completed regular organizational business: they approved the Dec. 17, 2024 meeting minutes; authorized the auditor’s office to issue warrants and publish a claims listing for $180,279.96; accepted and placed on file the county recorder’s report of fees collected for December 2024 in the amount of $43,694.70; designated three newspapers as the county’s official publications for 2025; reappointed a member to the 7th Judicial Department Board of Corrections; reappointed two representatives to the Jackson County Economic Alliance board; and adopted supervisor committee and outside-board assignments for the year.
“Motion passed. Congratulations, both of you,” the board chair said after the vote on the chair and vice chair. Outgoing board leadership thanked colleagues for their service and said they would support the incoming chair.
County Auditor (listed in the meeting packet as Lisa Smith) led the board through the required items at the start of the year, calling for motions on minutes, warrants and official publications and recording votes as the board acted.
The paper-designation motion named the Hope and Sentinel Press, the Bellevue Herald-Leader and the Preston Times as Jackson County’s official newspapers for 2025. The board noted the additional cost of multiple official papers and briefly discussed electronic posting requirements enacted by recent legislation but left the existing newspaper designations in place for now.
The board also reappointed a supervisor to the 7th Judicial Department Board of Corrections and confirmed representatives to the Jackson County Economic Alliance: Supervisor Don Schmeicher and Ryan Kilberg were reappointed to the Alliance board. Committee and outside-board assignments were approved as presented, with the board chair taking any roles stipulated as chair positions.
The board adjourned after routine committee reports and scheduling.
