A resident, Lauren D. Herrera, delivered a petition with 369 signatures asking Will County officials to revise zoning rules to allow tiny homes as a legal housing option and to classify tiny homes as accessory dwelling units or allow them under special-use permits.
Herrera described tiny homes as compact, functional dwellings that can expand affordable housing choices and urged the planning commission and county board to update the zoning code to permit tiny-home construction and legal occupancy. "Everyone deserves a safe and stable place to call home and tiny homes can be a part of that solution," Herrera said as she submitted the petition.
Committee reaction: a committee member noted that the county previously approved ADUs in a past resolution and encouraged the petitioner to bring the topic to the Land Use Committee for fuller review. The chair and other members suggested Land Use is the appropriate venue to consider zoning changes and implementation details.
Next steps: members recommended the petitioner work with the Land Use Committee and the planning commission to advance a zoning amendment or ordinance if desired. No formal action or vote on zoning changes was taken at the meeting.
