Sunny Hill reports limited COVID and norovirus cases, high resident vaccination rates and upcoming IDPH survey

Maggie McDowell of Sunny Hill gave the committee an update on infection control, vaccination coverage and regulatory schedules at the long-term care facility.
McDowell said Sunny Hill had about 150 residents and reported the following resident vaccination coverage: 85% for seasonal influenza, 58% fully vaccinated for COVID-19, 85% for RSV, and 78% for pneumococcal pneumonia vaccinations. The facility reported it entered outbreak status for COVID-19 after three residents tested positive; staff also described a single norovirus infection that had recovered.
Precautions and coordination: McDowell said Sunny Hill reverted to masking for staff and visitors, limited some interactions and worked closely with the health department's communicable-disease staff to contain spread. The facility uses enhanced barrier precautions, provides staff education and has an infection-preventionist who oversees protocols.
Regulatory and administrative matters: McDowell told the committee Sunny Hill's annual Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) survey window is open from Nov. 1 through May 31; surveys are unannounced and may occur any day within that window. She said Medicare and Medicaid revalidations are coming in February and finance staff are preparing required cost reports. McDowell also invited committee members to attend Sunny Hill's annual governing-advisory-board meeting, scheduled for Jan. 27 from 10 a.m. to noon in the county boardroom, where the facility will review the past year and its health-and-life-safety work.
Staffing and contract use: during questions, McDowell said Sunny Hill continues to use contracted nursing staff to cover vacations and benefit leave; the facility has increased its core staffing since the COVID peak and maintains relationships with staffing agencies for continuity when needed.
Next steps: McDowell said Sunny Hill will continue infection-control measures and invited committee members to the Jan. 27 governing-advisory meeting.
