The Harlingen City Commission received and approved a proposal to install a mural honoring the late Herb Kelleher, founder of Southwest Airlines, in downtown Harlingen.
Ed Meza presented the Herb Kelleher Mural Project, saying the Kelleher family and Southwest Airlines approved the concept and the proposed downtown location at La Zolla Plaza. Artist Angel Hernandez of Harlingen was selected and displayed a rendering of the design; Meza said the mural will include one of Kelleher's well-known quotes and that the design was cleared by the family and the airline.
Meza told commissioners Harlingen was the fourth city Southwest served in its early expansion and said the mural is intended as a local tribute to how the airline helped the community by adding Harlingen to its original route network. The commission said the mural will become the 28th in the downtown historic district and that additional murals are planned.
The commission did not discuss funding sources or a firm installation schedule at the meeting; city staff and the development organization will coordinate logistics, permissions and future timing for installation.
The commission acknowledged Angel Hernandez, the selected artist, who was present in the audience.
