Board OKs third wall sign for Great North Commons with glare‑shielding condition

The Ashwaubenon Village Board on Dec. 17 approved a site plan review allowing a third wall sign on the east elevation of the Great North Commons building at 789 Armed Forces Drive, subject to a condition that the sign be shielded to prevent glare into guest windows of an adjacent quality‑branded hotel.
Aaron, village planning staff, said the site is located in the sports‑entertainment zoning district where more than two wall signs require site plan and board approval. “Both site plan review committee and planning commission did recommend approval of the 3rd wall sign, as presented, but there was an additional condition . . . that the east elevation signage . . . be adequately shielded to prevent any glare into the guest windows of the Quality Inn hotel,” Aaron said.
A board member moved to approve the sign with the stated condition; the motion passed. During discussion trustees asked how shielding would be achieved; Aaron replied the typical approach is shielding installed below the sign and that, if glare becomes an issue, staff would work with the business and hotel to address it.
The approval follows positive recommendations from the site plan review committee and the Ashwaubenon Plan Commission and does not change the number of approved signs elsewhere on the property.
