Lancaster County staffers updated commissioners and chiefs on hazmat training reciprocity, upcoming classes and a change that now requires individual login to enroll in county training.
Staff said 25 personnel across multiple departments still need hazmat operations training; departments listed included Antioch, Camp Creek, Elgin, Black Creek, Kershaw and two McDonald stations, with counts varying by station. Staff asked chiefs not to approve course enrollments until reciprocity or prerequisites were fully documented so trainees are not registered for classes they are not eligible to attend.
Beginning this month, firefighters must be logged in to the county training portal to enroll in classes instead of enrolling directly from a public catalog page. Staff said this change prevents chiefs from signing up personnel without the individual firefighter’s awareness and ensures training records accurately reflect who attended. If personnel lack portal access, staff said to contact Brian for a portal access email or password reset.
Officials outlined several upcoming training opportunities: hazmat ops awareness and operations, firefighter 1 and 2 testing planned for late winter (with firefighter 1 likely in late January or February), an LZ (landing zone) class on Jan. 29 with afternoon and evening sessions, and a rescue class hosted locally. Staff said registration links and dates would be sent by email.
The commission was also briefed on the county’s VIP reporting and a reminder to submit end-of-year summaries and individual training records. No formal action was taken; staff requested chiefs ensure personnel complete prerequisites and that training coordinators monitor reciprocity approvals before approving enrollments.
