Board adopts state records schedule for Wisconsin public libraries

The Franklin Public Library Board of Trustees adopted the Wisconsin Public Libraries general records schedule at its Dec. 23 meeting.
Trustees voted to adopt the schedule so the library can follow the state‑recommended retention and disposition rules. Library staff explained that after the board adopts the schedule the director will submit the signed form to the Wisconsin Historical Society; once the historical society approves, staff may destroy records according to the schedule. Trustees said they will retain any materials they are uncertain about until the historical society or the city attorney confirms retention rules.
The motion to adopt was made by a trustee and approved by voice vote. The board emphasized that adoption does not require immediate destruction; staff will follow the state's process and preserve records when uncertain.
