Lapeer County commissioners elect Gary Howell chair; Hagedon chosen vice chair

Commissioner Gary Howell was elected chair of the Lapeer County Board of Commissioners at the board's organizational meeting Jan. 2; the board also selected Commissioner Hagedon as vice chair in a separate vote.
The clerk, Theresa Spencer, opened the meeting and called the roll before the body took nominations. After a brief nomination period, a motion was made "that a unanimous vote be cast for Gary Howell as chair of this board," which carried on a roll-call vote that registered seven "yes" responses.
"It's a great honor to be selected chairman of this board of commissioners," Howell said after his election. "I've been in public life for a long time, and this is sort of the apex of my career. ... Here, with the seven of us, we can have personal relationships, personal contacts."
For vice chair, commissioners nominated Commissioner Hagedon and Commissioner Ian Kemp. The clerk conducted a roll-call vote asking members to state whether they were voting for Hagedon or Kemp; Hagedon won by a 5-2 margin. "Thankful for the trust that you all put in me," Hagedon said after his election. "I'm honored, and I look forward to serving with you all."
The meeting then moved to routine organizational business. Commissioners present confirmed the leadership choices and proceeded to committee, schedule and other items on the agenda.
Votes at a glance: The motion to elect Howell chair passed unanimously (7-0). The vice-chair election was decided 5-2 in favor of Commissioner Hagedon.
