Library director reports strong summer programs, new digital resources and upcoming outreach events

Heather, the Farmers Branch library director, told the board the library’s summer reading programs drew 4,225 program attendees over an eight-week period and that overall participation was slightly ahead of the previous year.
Heather said the library posted statistics online and that monthly reports include counts for new library cards, computer users and physical checkouts. The board learned that August program attendance dipped slightly as families returned to school but that staff considered the summer outcomes a success.
The director announced a new digital resource that provides current editions (and up to six months’ archive) of the Dallas Morning News, the New York Times and USA Today, along with many popular magazines in English, Spanish and Korean. Heather said the addition is intended to expand access to current news and magazine content for patrons.
Recent community outreach was highlighted: a successful blood drive that collected 21 units and a well-attended outdoor “bubble truck” event with more than 200 participants. Heather listed upcoming engagement opportunities where staff and trustees can represent the library, including the Farmers Branch Fire Station 3 open house (this month), a trunk-or-treat at McLaughlin (October), and holiday events including a Santa-and-Cookies program scheduled for Dec. 18. Heather invited trustees to volunteer at events and noted the department will supply tents and outreach materials for large community festivals.
Trustees discussed outreach strategy and suggested combining library participation with other city booths to increase visibility; one trustee proposed a scavenger-hunt activity tied to the art inventory to engage children when artworks are reinstalled. Heather said staff posts program highlights on the library’s web pages and social feeds and that staff will continue targeted outreach for upcoming events.
