Board approves Joel O'Buck book drive kickoff, assigns roles and collection dates

The Farmers Branch Library Board on Nov. 9 approved plans for the library’s annual Joel O’Buck children’s book drive and a kickoff scavenger-hunt event on Dec. 6, 2023.
The board confirmed the drive will accept gently used and new children’s books beginning at the kickoff on Dec. 6 and continuing through Dec. 20, with a drop box available inside the library. The Dec. 6 kickoff will include a scavenger hunt and hot cocoa from 6 to 8 p.m., and the board approved program-night duties, including hot chocolate supervision and ‘floater’ staff to answer patron questions.
Trustees assigned volunteer roles for program night and volunteer book-sorting dates. The board set sorting sessions on Dec. 13 and Dec. 20 to prepare donated books for distribution and agreed to limit book-sorting groups to no more than three volunteers at a time to avoid creating a quorum.
On assignments, trustees volunteered for specific roles: Kelsey to man the book donation drop, Lee and Ashley to supervise hot chocolate, Zach and David to serve as floaters, and additional volunteers to staff the sorting dates. Members discussed logistics for a decorated book bin and a blanket inside the bin for festive collection. Marketing will include city newsletter placements, social media, posters and sharing in neighborhood groups once promotional copy is finalized.
The motion to approve the program and volunteer assignments passed by voice vote.
