Library board selects Dog's Purpose, partners with animal shelter for Feb. 8 movie night

The Farmers Branch Library Board voted Nov. 9 to hold a community movie night on Feb. 8, 2024, selecting the family film A Dog's Purpose as the primary title and naming Inside Out as the backup. The board set the runtime for the program from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and approved outreach to the Farmers Branch animal shelter to bring adoptable animals to the event.
Board members said the shelter partnership is intended to boost attendance and link the screening to local animal-adoption efforts. Trustees discussed logistics such as containing animals and avoiding a “bring-your-own-dog” policy after concerns that attendees overestimate their pets’ behavior. The board said any animals present must be handled and supervised by shelter staff so library volunteers are not responsible for direct management.
Members also discussed promotion strategies, including city social channels, the Farmers Branch Moms Facebook group and the library’s poster distribution, to reach families and teens. The board agreed to ask city marketing staff to post on Nextdoor and to share a library-created Facebook post in community groups.
Trustees agreed that, if the shelter can bring animals safely and keep them contained, A Dog's Purpose will be the event’s primary selection; Inside Out will be the alternate. The board approved the motion and set the program time to allow clearing the building well before closing.
Board members assigned no formal budget at the meeting and said further logistical details would be finalized in follow-up planning sessions with library staff and the shelter.
