The Farmers Branch Library Board reviewed turnout data from a recent “tearjerker” family movie night and approved a related holiday scavenger-hunt and book-collection program to be held in December.
Board Chair Kristen said the movie night had very low attendance and suggested the timing—early evening on a weeknight—and film selection may have contributed. “We had, like, three people that weren’t us come,” she said, noting the event occurred near the start of the school year and at a time many families are eating dinner. Board members discussed changing day and time (Saturday afternoons or mid-month) and linking the film night to a partner such as an animal-shelter adoption event to increase draw.
Separately, the board discussed a program Kelsey described as inspired by Iceland’s Christmas-book-giving tradition: a scavenger-hunt that encourages families to explore library services; after marking five items on a scavenger sheet patrons would receive a hot-chocolate prize. The board also proposed collecting donated books throughout December to give to a local hospital or partner. Members identified scheduling conflicts to avoid (the city Santa/Cookies event Dec. 13 and school breaks) and tentatively set kickoff for the week of Dec. 4, with book collection through the month.
Cassie moved to approve the scavenger-hunt/book-collection program; David seconded and the motion passed by voice vote. The board asked staff to finalize recipient details, create the scavenger sheet, and print copies for distribution. Kristen and other board members said they would help staff promote and staff the event. The board also discussed running the event in the library’s program room and using hot-water and disposable cups supplied by the board.
Next steps: staff to confirm donation recipient, secure logistics, finalize the scavenger-hunt sheet and print materials, and report back at the next meeting.
