Board narrows calendar options; superintendent launches cell-phone committee to study policy

Superintendent Dr. Florence Thompson told the board the district’s calendar committee reviewed four draft school-year calendars and narrowed them to two options. Those two calendars will be shared with staff and committee representatives will collect feedback on which option they prefer and why. The committee plans to present a final recommendation to the board after reviewing statutory and contractual constraints.

Thompson said the calendar discussions included robust debate about start dates, timing and length of breaks, and end-of-semester timing; the committee noted statutory requirements and collective-bargaining constraints that limited some calendar options. Board members emphasized the trade-offs between starting earlier or later in the summer and the importance of ending the first semester in December so that transcripts, AP timing and scholarship deadlines align with college application timelines.

Thompson also announced a new cell-phone committee, which will meet beginning tomorrow evening. The committee’s first task is to review current research on student cell-phone usage in schools; members already have access to research articles and the superintendent said the district has received “positive feedback” about cell-phone restrictions implemented this year at the high schools. The committee will survey students, staff and parents, incorporate real-world experiences from the high schools, and then develop clear recommendations for the board to consider with the goal of producing a research-based policy that balances instruction, well-being and family communication needs. Thompson indicated the superintendent’s target is to bring recommendations early in the second semester so any board action could be considered for implementation in the next school year.
