The Santa Ana City Council voted Wednesday to award a contract to Musco Sports Lighting LLC to install LED sports lighting at Centennial Park, a project council members described as “decades in the making.”
Council members framed the lighting as a public-safety and community-use improvement that will allow youth sports and other events to continue later into the evening. “If we have well-lit parks, people are going to feel more comfortable using them,” Council member Pham said.
City staff said the contract was authorized as part of projects approved in the budget earlier in the year and that the action at the meeting is intended to expedite installation. Council members repeatedly thanked city staff and the city manager for moving a long-shelved project into active procurement and construction.
Motion to approve the Musco Sports Lighting contract was made by Mayor Meskwah, seconded by Council member Penalosa, and passed by roll call 6–0 (one absence recorded). The council determined the action is exempt from further CEQA review at the meeting.
Council members said they expect the upgraded lighting to support large events at the park, increase perceptions of safety, and encourage ongoing recreational use. Staff will manage implementation and report timelines and milestones back to the council as the procurement and installation proceed.
