Council acted after a staff presentation noting state law and the city charter require an annual evaluation and periodic reappointment. Juanita Epperson, the municipal court administrator, told the council the judge was originally appointed in 1992 and that the evaluation and reappointment follow the requirements of the city charter and state law.
Judge Price addressed the council before the vote, saying he has served the city for decades and that his goal is to run a court that balances “justice and mercy.” He said the court seeks to bring people into compliance with the law and may use alternatives to achieve compliance when appropriate.
A motion was made to reappoint Price for a two-year term and to approve the evaluation form; the motion passed. Council members were asked to sign the evaluation form so it could be filed with the city secretary.
The action implements the council’s annual personnel oversight for the municipal court judge and does not change the judge’s duties or court procedures discussed during the meeting.
Council took no additional administrative direction on the court during the Oct. 7 meeting.
