Committee approves amendments to legal services contracts for pending litigation and courthouse planning

Wayne County’s committee approved amendments Oct. 15 to extend legal services with Seward Henderson for ongoing litigation and with Zossmer PC for legal work on a proposed civil justice complex.
The Wayne County Committee on Government Operations approved two corporation counsel contract amendments Oct. 15: Amendment 3 to a two‑year legal services agreement with Seward Henderson for representation in Robert Rees v. Doherty, Stella, Wayne County, et al., and Amendment 1 to a two‑year agreement with Zossmer PC to provide legal services related to plans for a civil justice complex that would include a civil courthouse, parking and related facilities.
Suhumu (Deputy Corporation Counsel) provided an overview. On the civil justice complex, Suhumu said a procurement panel recommended a vendor to conduct a feasibility study and the county issued an award letter to HOK in June. The county is negotiating a contract with HOK and will present that contract for approval once negotiations are complete. Joe Slater, speaking from the meeting, identified HOK as Helmut, Obata & Kassabaum, the architecture firm that worked on the criminal justice center complex.
The committee approved both amendments on a motion by Commissioner Wilson, supported by Commissioner Glean. No dollar amounts or contract numbers were read into the committee record during the discussion.
The approvals allow corporation counsel to continue providing representation in the named litigation and to continue legal work related to planning for the civil justice complex; the feasibility study by HOK remains under negotiation and will return to the board for approval when the contract is finalized.
