Suella Himes, Community Action Crossroads director, told commissioners she has worked "serving domestic violence victims for 28 years" and described immediate operational impacts from a budget impasse. "Both shelters are staying full," she said, and recounted staff reductions: "we have, regretfully had to take action and we've laid off 2 staff. I've lost 1 counselor advocate full time. I've lost my crossroads coordinator full time." Himes said remaining staff are covering services "24/7" and urged residents to contact legislators to describe the impact. She also said the program learned that a VOCA grant was awarded on Oct. 1, which she called "good news," but said the staff reductions continue to affect response time.
A county staff member responding to questions about the budget impasse said the county "as an entity is fine" for now but acknowledged the delays are already affecting reimbursements to partner providers, particularly children-and-youth services that rely heavily on state reimbursement. The staff member warned that if the impasse extends into the new year, it could "put a strain on operations" for organizations dependent on state funding.
Commissioners thanked Himes for her remarks and moved the proclamations to a vote without further discussion. The meeting closed with a reminder of an upcoming Board of Elections meeting and the next commissioners meeting scheduled Oct. 28.
