Commission approves Trex-style composite replacement for front steps at 420 Cass Street

The Green Bay Landmarks Commission on Oct. 15 approved a certificate of appropriateness to replace the front steps at 420 Cass Street with a composite (Trex-type) material, finding the existing precast concrete steps are not historic and the proposed replacement is appropriate.
Staff described the existing stairs as a free-standing precast stair not attached to the primary structure and noted metal railings in poor condition. “They’re not a component of the primary structure,” a staff presentation said, describing the existing stairs as non-historic. Commissioners concurred and approved the COA; one commissioner said the existing steps were in poor shape and supported the replacement.
The motion to approve passed with a second and was recorded as carried. No conditions beyond standard COA requirements were discussed during the vote.
