Fire district awarded SAFER grant; city expects Station 2 on Wilson Road by March

BST and G Fire District officials told the council they were awarded a FEMA SAFER grant to hire six full-time firefighters and that construction on Station 2 near Wilson Road is on track for a March opening.
Lieutenant Stelzer of the BST and G Fire District told the Sunbury City Council on Oct. 15 that the district received a SAFER grant from FEMA that will fund hiring six full-time firefighters over a three-year period.
Stelzer said the federal grant will cover about 75% of the new hires’ costs for the first two years, with a reduced share in the third year and the local fire district covering costs thereafter. The district is using the additional staff to help operate a new Station 2 being built off Wilson Road; Stelzer said the project remains on schedule and the council should expect a March timeframe for opening.
Council members and staff thanked the fire leadership for preparatory work on outfitting and staffing the new station. No budget ordinance or specific hiring schedule appeared in the meeting record; council did not take formal action on the SAFER grant during the session.
