Sunnyvale commission begins drafting 2026 sustainability work plan; discusses distributed storage, turf disposal, state legislation

The Sunnyvale Sustainability Commission on Oct. 20, 2025 took the first step toward a 2026 annual work plan, spending the meeting’s substantive time identifying topics to research or present to the commission next year. Commissioners proposed items including distributed electricity storage, artificial-turf disposal and recycling, legislative updates that affect environmental rules, fleet electrification and edible-food recovery; staff said it will add those items where appropriate and return a fuller draft for a formal vote in November.

Why it matters: The commission’s adopted work plan guides what the commission studies and what it recommends to the City Council. Several topics raised have ties to city climate goals and to county- or utility-level programs that could affect Sunnyvale residents and operations.

Commissioner Peranto suggested adding “distributed storage for electricity in the city” to the work plan to help reduce peak demand and avoid new transmission lines. “Distributed storage either, focused in large battery assemblies or in buses or in collection of homes are all possibilities for discussion,” Peranto said.
