Council advances resolution to name Goose Creek Trail underpass for cyclist Alex Marietta; alderman urges naming policy

Davenport — The Davenport City Council Committee of the Whole moved forward a resolution to name a trail underpass that serves the Goose Creek Trail (intersection of Kimberly Road and Eastern Avenue) in honor of cyclist Alex Marietta.

Kristen Marietta, of Geneseo, Illinois, spoke to the council and said of her late husband, “I think this is an appropriate honor to name it after him.” Alderman Griffin provided background: Marietta was a small-business owner in Davenport who “was tragically killed on his bike while crossing Kimberly Road in 02/2021,” and Griffin said trail and underpass work funded through prior ARPA allocations had helped reach a point where the underpass could be named.

Alderman Newton supported the resolution but pressed for a broader city policy. Newton said staff-provided materials were “very minimal” and reported that the city currently lacks a consistent policy-setting process for naming public infrastructure. “To my surprise, it was absolutely lacking, in the sense that the city of Davenport does not actually have a policy set in place that’s set forth by criteria,” Newton said, and she described working with staff to draft criteria for future consideration.

Why it matters: Naming public infrastructure recognizes local residents but also raises questions about equitable and consistent criteria across multiple tragedies and memorial requests. Newton urged council to consider a resolution establishing standards for future requests so decisions are applied uniformly.
