Glendale issues proclamations for October: Breast Cancer Awareness, Domestic Violence Awareness and Sister Cities Day

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Council read a proclamation recognizing October 2025 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and invited medical and hospital representatives to speak. Dr. Jay Yeh, medical director of cancer services at Adventist Health Glendale, and Jomela Markarian (vice president, Adventist Health Glendale) described the value of early detection and the hospital’s screening and breast‑care services, including 3‑D mammography, ultrasound, MRI and image‑guided biopsies. Betsy Hart of Glendale Memorial Hospital noted a recent “Go Pink” mobile mammography event conducted in partnership with Glendale Police and Fire to improve screening access.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
The council proclaimed October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Romela Markarian, chair of the Commission on the Status of Women, and Deborah Sal of the YWCA of Glendale and Pasadena accepted the proclamation and described local resources. YWCA staff said the organization operates a 24‑hour crisis hotline (888‑999‑7511), multilingual services, emergency shelter and drop‑in supportive services at their Lexington Avenue offices; YWCA also announced a safe‑haven collaboration that will make local fire stations available as temporary refuge sites for survivors in an emergency.
Sister Cities International Day
The council also recognized Sister Cities International Day, celebrating Glendale’s civic, cultural and people‑to‑people links with sister and friendship cities across Armenia, South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Sister City committee members introduced themselves and outlined recent and planned cultural exchange activity, including recent visits from Rosarito representatives and plans for reciprocal delegations.
Why it matters
The proclamations were largely ceremonial but included operational information of interest to residents: the YWCA phone number and services; descriptions of screening and screening events from local hospitals; and invitations to volunteer for Sister Cities activities. Councilmembers used the items to spotlight partnerships between the city and hospitals, public safety departments and community organizations.
