County staff say health insurance rates likely to rise; consultant to present options next week

Dickinson County officials told commissioners that employee health insurance costs are trending higher than the roughly 10% increase budgeted for next year and that consultant BKD will present carrier proposals and firm numbers at a meeting next week.
"We did have some higher claims this last year as well that's affecting that. So we're anticipating an increase. We budgeted around a 10% increase, and ... it's looking like it could come in north of that," Marcus Rothschild said. Rothschild said BKD is negotiating with multiple carriers to find the best rates and will return with options for the commission to review.
Officials said open enrollment will run Nov. 10–17 and that Buchanan representatives will be on-site Nov. 12–13 to assist employees. County staff noted that continuity of provider networks and convenience for employees will factor into the commission's decision alongside premium cost.
Commissioners and staff discussed incentive programs and wellness initiatives that could reduce claims and lower costs; no formal action was taken at the meeting.
