County discusses $1M KDOT grant for 1-mile safety project on 1400 Avenue

County staff told the Dickinson County Commission during a work study session that the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has awarded a High Risk Rural Roads grant covering roughly $1,000,055 toward a one-mile safety improvement project on 1400 Avenue just east of Jeep Road.
Marcus Rothschild said the county's original estimate for total construction and engineering was about $1.1 million; current estimates have increased to about $1.6 million, creating a potential county share of roughly $600,000. "So it's looking like the county's portion could be somewhere close to $600,000 for that project," Rothschild said. The grant will support replacement of six culverts, reclassifying a bridge as a structure for inspection purposes, and adding about a mile of shoulder in a curved section identified as hazardous.
Staff said the site was selected after prior unsuccessful applications and that limiting the request to one mile helped qualify the project. Construction is expected to start in summer 2026 and conclude around September 2026, according to staff estimates; final scheduling remains subject to further design and coordination.
Commissioners raised timing and local impacts, including harvest-season traffic and school routing. Staff said the county engineer will provide more detailed scheduling when available. No formal vote or appropriation occurred at the meeting; staff said they will return with further details and any required budget actions.
