Board adopts several policy revisions; committee highlights new PIAA rule on outside-school athletes

The Springfield Township School District Board of School Directors approved five revised policies in a single reading at its Oct. 21 meeting and advanced two other policies for formal adoption at a later meeting.

The policies adopted in a single reading addressed academic standards, curriculum, home education documentation, diabetes management, and Title I parent and family engagement. Policy Committee Chair Sean Jordan summarized the committee’s September 29 meeting and said the updates mirror changes required by state and federal guidance and by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Among the items discussed in committee was Policy 102 (academic standards), which the committee updated to reflect changes recommended by the Pennsylvania Department of Education required for implementation by the 2026–27 school year, and Policy 105 (curriculum), which includes clarifying language about instruction for holidays and events that will be varied by grade level. Policy 209.2 was revised to add a delegation-of-responsibility section and to incorporate a required parental notification about Type 1 diabetes for incoming elementary and grade-6 students.

PIAA bylaws and athletics access During the board meeting, administrators and a board member highlighted a separate, substantive change to Policy 123 (interscholastic athletics) resulting from recent PIAA bylaw revisions. Dr. Mary Jo Iannacone and other administrators said the PIAA change allows students who attend faith-based schools within the township, or township residents who attend faith-based schools anywhere, to participate on district athletic teams when the home school does not offer the same program. The board clarified that the change does not alter the district’s school-size classification for league placement.

First readings and next steps Policy 123 (interscholastic athletics) and new Policy 815.3 (text messaging privacy, added under acceptable-use guidance for district communications) were presented and approved for a first reading; the board scheduled them for a second reading and adoption at a future meeting. The policy committee will continue to meet; the next committee meeting was announced for Dec. 11.

Votes and procedure The five revised policies presented for single-reading adoption were approved by voice vote. The two policies presented for first reading were also approved to move forward on their first reading. Committee reports and the policy packet are available on the district website for review.

Ending note Administrators said the policy revisions are part of ongoing alignment with state guidance and with PIAA requirements; the policy committee will continue to monitor state and federal updates and will return recommended language to the full board for any additional readings and final votes.
