The Saint Croix School District Board of Education voted Oct. 22 to create a head coach position for girls wrestling and to compensate an existing assistant coach at the head‑coach level for the inaugural program year.
Brad Hoser (athletic staff present for the item) described plans for a middle‑school girls wrestling season starting Nov. 5 and an expanding high‑school girls roster. He said roughly 15 middle‑school girls had signed up across grades five through eight and that five to eight high‑school girls were expected to participate.
Hoser proposed promoting a current assistant, Mike Nelson, to a head‑coach pay level so Nelson can assume full head‑coach duties this season; the athletic staff would revisit adding a paid assistant position in the next budget cycle. "What I'd like to propose is just bumping this contract from an assistant to a head coach position so that he can actually function as a head coach," Hoser said. He acknowledged budget constraints and said the change is intended to be a short‑term adjustment while numbers grow.
Board members asked about roster size, tournament commitments and budget impact. Administrators estimated the contract bump would add a few thousand dollars to the athletic budget for the year; Hoser said the increase would be approximately $1,500 to $4,000 depending on placement on the pay scale.
The board approved the motion to add the girls head‑wrestling coach position and to place Nelson at the head‑coach pay level for the season. Members carried the motion by voice vote.
