Downtown College Place Association secures 501(c)(3) status, outlines Main Street-style goals

The Downtown College Place Association has secured 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and is planning programs aimed at downtown beautification, economic vitality and events, staff told the Youth Advisory Commission on Oct. 15.
Miss Garcia, who said she serves as president of the association’s board, presented the organization’s use of the Main Street approach—economic vitality, design, organization and promotion—to support local businesses and enhance downtown. She said the association is currently an affiliate of Washington Main Street and hopes to become a designated Washington Main Street community in 2026, which she said would help direct some business tax dollars back into local projects.
Garcia described early initiatives including quarterly downtown events, a benches program to add decorative seating, an emphasis on wellness-oriented businesses, and hiring an executive director as the nonprofit grows. She noted that the association has already received grants and that city support helped accelerate the organization’s formation.
Commissioners asked about the geographic boundary of “downtown”; Garcia said the association’s current boundary runs along College Avenue from Rose to 12th Street (near Andy’s Market) and the group is advocating to extend it toward the highway to include the school area.
