Youth commission projects: mural honoring sister city and pen-pal grant highlighted

City staff briefed the College Place Youth Advisory Commission on youth-led projects including a mural to honor the city’s sister city in Mexico and a pen-pal program funded by a Wild Horse Foundation grant.
Miss Garcia showed a mock-up of a mural planned for a building facing the post office that will feature flowers indigenous to both College Place and the sister city in Mexico. Garcia said the mural artist plans to add architectural details over time and described plantings such as poppies, dahlias and Mexican prickly pear as part of the design.
Garcia also said the city received a grant from the Wild Horse Foundation to establish a pen-pal program between the two cities. Staff are seeking a suitable elementary school partner in the sister city to participate; Garcia described ongoing outreach to identify a school partner.
The commission discussed potential community events and projects—such as a community night with music, food and activities—and a proposed focus on safety improvements (better street lighting near the university apartments) that a commissioner raised as a local youth safety concern.
