Commission clears feasibility study RFP after WisDOT grant extension

The Wausau Transit Commission on Oct. 16 authorized staff to move forward with a request for proposals for a feasibility study to evaluate whether the current transit facility can be expanded or requires relocation.
Staff said they had secured a grant extension—working with an entity referred to in the meeting as Wistat—so the grant is extended through the end of 2026. According to staff, the grant covers 100% of the feasibility study cost from WisDOT and requires no city match.
“The feasibility study is to determine whether or not our current facility could be upgraded for an expansion in the future or if we would need to relocate,” a staff member said. The staff member added that the earlier RFP was done incorrectly and “according to WisDOT. They did not accept it,” so the city must reissue a corrected RFP.
Commissioners discussed that facility planning should consider the potential to accommodate electric buses in the future but that acquiring electric buses would be a longer-term prospect because current buses have approximately a 12-year service life.
A motion to give staff permission to reissue the feasibility-study RFP passed unanimously; commissioners said they expect the procurement process to move forward so work could begin in spring following the RFP and bid process.
