Transit commission extends SRF contract to clear path for technology RFP

The Wausau Transit Commission on Oct. 16 approved a contract extension with SRF to allow staff to issue a request for proposals (RFP) for a planned technology upgrade on the city’s buses.
Staff told commissioners the contract currently expires at the end of the year and that SRF agreed to extend the contract without additional cost so it can complete the RFP work. Commissioners were told the extension is needed to meet an installation timeline tied to available funding.
“There’s no additional cost for the extension of the contract. They're gonna continue to honor the contract dollars wise, but they needed it to state more time,” a staff member said. The staff member added the RFP work is the first step toward procuring the technology and that the installation must occur by 2026.
A commissioner said the delay was disappointing because the technology project has been discussed for years and that the commission is using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for the work. “It was disappointing that this kinda lagged for a year…we were using ARPA funds,” the commissioner said.
The motion to extend the SRF contract and proceed with the RFP passed unanimously. Commissioners directed staff to move quickly to issue the RFP so procurement can proceed.
