Resident questions delay in MetroParks funding; commissioners say they'll consider requests after budget review

Commissioner Malloy replied that the parks’ request had not been on the current meeting’s agenda and that the board had held a budget meeting the previous day to assess mandatory and nonmandatory expenditures. “We had to see where we were...there's mandatory services, and then there's nonmandatory services,” Malloy said, adding that updated figures from the Budget Commission showed roughly $1.1 million more than expected.
Malloy and other commissioners said the parks’ request would be considered alongside similar requests from the Board of Elections, the recorder’s office and other county departments. “It’ll be put on at our next meeting,” Malloy said in response to Shook’s question about timing.
Shook pressed commissioners on consistency, citing prior statements from a commissioner that the county bears some responsibility for boards it funds. Commissioners responded that the parks receive their own revenue in addition to county support and that formal action would occur when the item appears on an agenda.
No formal vote on MetroParks funding occurred at the meeting; commissioners instructed staff and the parks’ chair to present a request for the next meeting so the board could act after reviewing all outstanding budget requests.
