The Canal Winchester Landmarks Commission on Aug. 25 approved application CA25038, permitting the repainting of historic lettering and the installation of three HVAC louver penetrations on the Grama Elevator building at 10 West Oak Street.
Staff presented a historical photograph showing faded lettering on the building and said the applicant proposed white, sans‑serif painted lettering on the north and east facades to match historic proportions. The applicant also requested three metal louvered vents (approximately 42 inches by 30 inches) painted to match the siding: one on the east elevation (an intake louver) and two on the north elevation to relieve heat build‑up in the upper floors. The applicant explained the vents are interlocked so the top thermostat‑controlled louvers open only at high temperatures and that screens would be included to limit birds and insects.
Commissioners reviewed scale and placement, noted an historic photograph that showed similar lettering, and asked staff and the applicant to provide a paint selection. The applicant agreed to email a paint card for the lettering; staff will record the selected off‑white. The commission voted to approve CA25038 as presented; roll call recorded yes votes from David Craycraft, Whit Wardell, Roger White, Linda Henry and Pete Lynch.
The approval includes the painted lettering on the north and east elevations and the three painted louvers as described; the applicant will supply final color swatches to staff by email.
