The Canal Winchester Landmarks Commission on Aug. 25 approved application CA25037 for four first‑floor window replacements at 36 North High Street, a circa‑1870 building in the Columbus Street historic district.
Staff told commissioners the windows appear to be original wood and the proposed replacements are aluminum‑clad windows with a wood interior. The applicant noted the exterior trim will not be changed. The application included a detail that some replacement panes have blinds enclosed between glass; commissioners agreed that internal blinds are not appropriate for the historic district and the commission approved the windows with the explicit exception that there be no blinds enclosed in the glazing.
Commissioner discussion addressed whether original grids had been decorative snap‑in grids; staff reported grids seen in older photographs appear to have been applied rather than original muntins. The applicant said the four first‑floor windows selected for replacement show rot at the bottoms and need replacement now; the applicant intends to address additional windows on the upper floors in future work.
A motion to approve CA25037 with the exception that no blinds be enclosed passed by roll call: Rick Ordell (yes), Pete Lynch (yes), David Craycraft (yes), Roger White (yes) and Linda Henry (yes). The exterior trim will remain as indicated in the application.
