The Canal Winchester Landmarks Commission on Aug. 25 approved application CA25035, allowing the replacement asphalt shingles installed on a multi‑section garage at 151 West Waterloo to remain.
At the meeting staff described the site history and the roof composition prior to the work: several different roofing materials and sections had existed, including a standing‑seam metal section and older three‑tab shingles. The applicant told the commission the work was completed in July and that the installed product is a GAF 50‑year dimensional shingle in a charcoal color intended to unify the previously mismatched roof sections.
The applicant said, "The color of the shingles is is considered charcoal," and explained that a metal section had been removed and replaced with matching charcoal shingles to create a uniform appearance. Staff noted that some lower roof areas use a rubber membrane and that material will remain where appropriate.
Commissioners discussed whether standing seam metal should have been reinstalled in one area but concluded the change was acceptable because the roof is not highly visible from the street and the new shingles are an improvement. The commission voted to approve CA25035 as presented; Commissioners David Craycraft, Roger White, Linda Henry, Pete Lynch and Whit Wardell recorded yes votes in roll call.
Staff also advised the applicant to submit additional details if they proceed with planned siding repairs; the contractor is expected to provide separate documentation for proposed future siding work.
